The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

Every good backup strategy follows the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies of your data with 2 media types and 1 off-site. The first backup, typically stored on-site on your Synology , protects you from accidents or hardware failure and ensures that you can restore your data as quickly as possible. The second backup, stored off-site in the cloud or onto another Synology device, protects you against disasters, so that if the worst happens, you can retrieve your data and move forward.

Using a 3-2-1 backup rule enables you to protect yourself from many different types of data loss while minimizing cost and your time to recovery.

3 Copies:

  1. Original data on device
  2. First backup copy on NAS
  3. Second backup copy in the cloud
